News Of The District (1962)

Scoutabout and the preparations for it constitute but a small part of the activities of Scouting in Chester and District. During the past year several boys have received their Queen's Scout Certificate and others are rapidly approaching that goal ; whilst several have also achieved the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold or Silver Award, and others are working towards that end..

A party of 18 Senior Scouts and three Scouters from the District, under the leadership of Mr. G. L. Browne (A.D.C. Seniors), made a successful camping expedition to Denmark and Norway last August, and this has fired the imagination of Senior Troops in the District because already three of them are planning similar expeditions in 1963 and 1964 to Austria, Norway and Switzerland.

A cub of the 1st Saughall Group has been awarded the Cornwall Commendation for courage and cheerfulness under severe physical handicap.

We are sending two boys to the World Jamboree of Scouts at Marathon in Greece next August as part of the Cheshire (West) and British contingent, and we are hoping that a third place might be made available. After interviewing all the applicants, and following a further interview of a short list, the Selection Committee chose Michael Summers and Barry Travers (both members of the Gang incidentally) to be our representatives. Both boys are members of the 1st Christleton Group. In the event of a third place being allocated, William Fewtrell (43rd Chesters) has been chosen. Francis Kay (1st Upton) will be the reserve. Mr. Eric Heath (A.D.C. Scouts) has been selected by the County Commissioner to lead the Cheshire (West) contingent, and we congratulate him on this signal honour and are proud that the contingent is being led by one of our Scouters.

The Ladies' Committee which is now well established organise a busy programme of events which have the dual purpose of providing a social background for the Association and of raising funds to further scouting in the District. The newly formed District Rover Crew is establishing itself and we look forward to great things from it.

We had hoped to be able to announce the purchase of a District Camp Site, but unfortunately land which is both satisfactory for the purpose and which is not scheduled for some specific purpose by the Planning Authorities, is extremely difficult to find. Every possibility is followed up and if any reader of these notes knows of any area within about 15 miles of Chester, which might be suitable, he is asked to let the Association know.
